Fall is such a cozy season. The air is crisp, the leaves crunch underfoot, and many of us are decorating our homes or taking our pets on extra walks to soak it all in. While autumn has plenty to love, it also comes with a few hidden dangers for our furry friends. Here are some of the most common fall hazards to keep in mind so you and your pets can enjoy the season safely.
Mushrooms
Fall is mushroom season, and while some are harmless, others can be very toxic to pets. The tricky part is that it is almost impossible to tell the difference between safe and dangerous varieties just by looking. Because of that, the safest rule is to treat all wild mushrooms as harmful. If you see them pop up in your yard, pull them right away, and keep a close eye on your pup during walks. If your pet ever snacks on one, call your veterinarian or pet poison control (855) 764-7661.
Antifreeze
As the temperatures drop, and we know they do in Minot; people start pulling out antifreeze for winterizing RVs, cars, homes, etc. Unfortunately, pets are drawn to it because it tastes sweet, but even a tiny amount can be deadly. Always store antifreeze well out of reach and clean up spills immediately. If possible, consider switching to a pet safe version to reduce the risk.
Seasonal Decorations
Pumpkins, gourds, twinkle lights, and festive displays make fall feel special, but they can be tempting to curious pets. Chewing on cords can cause burns or shocks, and swallowing decorations can lead to stomach upset or blockages. Even natural items like dried corn or potpourri can cause problems if ingested. Try to keep these items out of paw’s reach and supervise your pets around any seasonal décor.
Fall candy
Candy particularly Halloween treats, can pose significant hazards to pets. Many candies contain ingredients like chocolate, xylitol, and artificial sweeteners, which are toxic to animals. Ingesting these sweets can lead to symptoms ranging from gastrointestinal distress to more severe health issues, including seizures or even death in some cases. Pet owners should be vigilant and ensure that their furry friends do not have access to these tempting treats, keeping them safely stored away to prevent accidental ingestion.
Enjoying Fall Together
Autumn is a beautiful time of year, and with just a little extra awareness, you and your pets can enjoy every moment of it together. Clear mushrooms from your yard, keep chemicals out of reach, and decorate with your pet’s safety in mind. If you ever think your pet has eaten something dangerous, do not wait. Call your veterinarian or the nearest emergency clinic right away.

Here’s to safe walks, cozy nights, and plenty of happy memories this fall with your best friend.
